Only when lit from behind does the image display properly. They were invented in the 19th century and became very popular, typically for lampshades, nightlights, or to be hung on windows.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is now possible to create lithophanes with a 3D printer in either grayscale, using just white plastic, and even in color using white outer layers with Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.
